Description:

The apprenticeships will give you the skills to work in the salon. You will enter as a junior at SVQ2 and the National Occupational Standards for hairdressing and barbering clearly identify that Level 2 is the qualification appropriate for a junior stylist or barber. Level 3 is the expected requirement for the role of a stylist, barber or other senior position in the salon.

Programme details:

New for 2018/19, the programme will now be delivered by Shetland College. Candidates will be required to enter at Level 2 and will hopefully then progress on to Level 3 after having had time to establish themselves in the salon. The MA is comprised of the following:

Qualifications you will acquire:

  • SVQ Level 2 MA Hairdressing at SCQF Level 5. This will be done over 2 years with the majority of time spent in the salon. Training will be arranged on Mondays on a bi-weekly basis. On Fridays or Saturdays, the assessor will come to the salon to do on-site observations and help with portfolio work.
  • SVQ Level 3 MA Hairdressing at SCQF Level 6. This will be done over 1 year. As with SVQ2, most of the time will be spent in the salon. Theory and exams will be done in the college under exam conditions and the assessor will come out to do the required assessments in the salon. Where required, the college's own salon may be used. Observations can be done on a flexible basis.
  • Core Skills will need to be achieved at SCQF Level 4. These will be arranged through Shetland College.

Personal qualities, skills and qualifications:

Applicants will be required to have good communication skills and be physically able for the tasks involved in the job. They should have a pleasant manner, smart appearance and a good standard of education.

An artistic flair and interest in fashion would be an advantage.
