Civil Engineering

Typical duties include: Land surveying, computer-aided drawing and planning of structures such as bridges, roads, drains, pipelines, piers, harbours and sea defences. Arranging laboratory anyaliysis of soil, rock and materials samples. Preparing estimates of labour costs and the amount and type of materials. Work is mostly office based with some site visits.

Description:

You will attend Inverness College on block release. The Higher National Certificate is made up of 12 units including Surveying, Mathematics, Structural Analysis, Contract & Project Management.

Duration:

This apprenticeship scheme is run over 4 years.

Delivery:

  • Year 1 & 2 -  Block release to Inverness College (3 x three-weeks)
  • Year 3 & 4 – Work based
Compilation of a portfolio of evidence for SVQ Level 3. While in the workplace trainees will build up a portfolio of evidence of their competence at work & submit this evidence electronically to their assessor.

Qualifications you will acquire:

  • HNC in Civil Engineering
  • SCQF 6 Construction Contracting Operations – Site Technical Support
  • Modern Apprenticeship in Construction - Technical
  • SCQF 9 Construction Site Management - Building and Civil Engineering
  • Modern Apprenticeship in Construction - Management

Personal qualities, skills and qualifications:

  • Ideally applicants should have Highers in subjects such as Maths, Graphic design, Physics and Computing. National 5s (or Credit Standard Grades) may be acceptable but the candidate would then have to complete a National Certificate instead of a Higher National Certificate.
  • Must have dedication and self discipline
  • Have a mature outlook
  • Applicants must be physically able for the tasks involved in the job
