Carpentry and Joinery


Typical duties include: making windows and doors; fitting skirting boards and facings; assembling wooden structures for houses; roofing and other general building work

Description:

For this programme you will attend Shetland College on block release. Third and fourth years will be mostly work based with a skills test in the fourth year to complete the Modern Apprenticeship.

Duration:

This is a four-year training programme, which incorporates a Modern Apprenticeship.

Delivery:

  • Block release to Shetland College
  • Practical assessments
  • Skills test
  • While in the workplace trainees will build up a portfolio of evidence of their competence at work

Qualifications you will acquire:

  • SCQF 6¬†Wood Occupations (Construction): Carpentry and Joinery
  • Modern Apprenticeship in Construction
  • Professional Development Award - Carpentry and Joinery

Personal qualities, skills and qualifications:

  • Ideally applicants should have National 5s or General/Credit Standard Grades in subjects such as Maths, Physics, Graphical Communications and Craft¬†& Design
  • Good co-ordination and dexterity is essential
  • Applicants must be physically able for the range of practical tasks involved

Note: This qualification can only be delivered by Train Shetland if the employer requesting training is not an affiliated member of CITB.
